Oars
Handmade oars, built to measure — born from founder Roland van Malsen's own love of rowing, and by now respected well beyond Makkum.
We make two lines: the Van Malsen 3.0 (since 2018) is stronger, lighter and better balanced, while the Van Malsen Premium is built from abachi and Oregon pine with a mahogany handle. Careful wood selection, special gluing techniques and a blade with the right curvature give us a stiff, light oar that reduces injury risk and improves the stroke.
Blade size, shaft length and thickness, and the handle are all tailored to the rower, within the current competition regulations. Feel free to ask about the options — no obligation.

Since 2019 we've been a certified apprenticeship workshop: shipbuilding and interior-joinery students from ROC Friese Poort get hands-on experience with the trade at our workshop, including building oars.
